Jaw Surgery in Turkey: An Honest Guide for International Patients
Turkey has become one of the world's busiest destinations for facial surgery — and jaw procedures are no exception. Costs are a fraction of US or Western European prices, Istanbul is easy to reach, and the surgical infrastructure at major hospitals is genuinely strong. But the same market that makes Turkey attractive also makes it noisy: heavily marketed clinics, aggressive packages, and results you rarely get to verify. This guide is about how to choose well.
1. Price is a fact. It is not a criterion.
The cost difference is real — the same double-jaw procedure that runs $60,000–100,000+ in the US is typically a fraction of that in Istanbul, at full-service hospitals with modern equipment. But within Turkey, prices vary less than outcomes do. Choose the surgeon first; let the price be whatever that surgeon's price is.
2. Check who is actually holding the saw
Jaw repositioning is the core territory of oral and maxillofacial surgery — the specialty trained on the jaws, the bite that sits on them and the airway behind them. Ask any prospective surgeon: What is your specialty? How many orthognathic cases have you performed? Do you coordinate with an orthodontist? What happens to my occlusion? A surgeon who talks only about angles and "looks" but cannot discuss your bite is telling you what their training is.
3. Demand a skeletal plan, not a morph
A filtered before/after render is marketing. A 3D skeletal plan — showing which bones move, by how many millimetres, and what happens to your occlusion and airway — is medicine. If a clinic cannot show you your plan at bone level, they are planning it on the table.
4. Beware the implant-only shortcut
Some heavily marketed "jawline transformation" offers skip skeletal assessment entirely and go straight to oversized custom implants. If your mandible is genuinely recessed, an implant does not correct it — it upholsters it, and leaves the bite and airway exactly where they were. 5. Ask what happens after you fly home
Complications and questions do not respect flight schedules. Before committing, ask: How long should I stay in Istanbul? (For jaw surgery, typically 10–14 days.) Who answers my messages at week 6? Is there a defined remote follow-up protocol? A serious practice has concrete answers.
6. A surgeon who says "no" is a good sign
Not everyone is a surgical candidate, and not every aesthetic wish is an anatomical problem. A consultation that can end with "surgery is not indicated for you" is the strongest signal that the ones who are told "yes" are told it for the right reasons.
